Making Your Own Hand-built Gong Fu-style Teapot

Gong Fu style tea preparation has been the preferred brewing style in China and Taiwan for centuries.

The special size of the tea pot, small cups, pitchers, water trays, and other utensils are designed to get the most from your tea. 

In this workshop I’ll brew tea for you to show you the basics of tea pot design.

Then, I’ll give you a basic pattern to follow to assemble a hand built tea pot. This design is basic but gives you the flexibility to customize the shape and design to reflect your personal style.  

As part of tradition, these pots are not glazed. The interaction of the clay and tea are part of this ancient style.

Some experience with clay is helpful but not necessary.

Adding another day

With another day there may be time to make some cups too. The type of pots we focus on are our interpretation of the classic Gong Fu Cha tea brewing style of China and Taiwan. It’s excellent for brewing oolongs, Puer teas, and red teas, but any good tea will do. They are the best for taking outside on a hike or picnic to the mountains or the beach or…?! All you need is a thermos and some superb Tea Leaves (link).
